Current version: 1.0.0 (2026-10-27). Source code: https://github.com/webcafeina/Apolo ## Apolo in brief - Free and open source (GPL-3.0), made by Webcafeína (https://webcafeina.com). - Desktop app for macOS 11+ (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows 10 and 11 (x64 and ARM) and Linux (x64 and ARM: .deb, .rpm, AppImage, APT and RPM repositories). - Writes WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, JPEG (MozJPEG), PNG (OxiPNG) and QOI; also opens HEIC. - Gives the same file, byte for byte, as the official tools cwebp, cjpeg, oxipng, avifenc and cjxl, with the same options. - Shows the original and the result side by side, with a difference map and the SSIMULACRA 2 score; it can find the lowest quality that reaches a score. - Batches of whole folders in parallel; a command line (`apolo`) and an MCP server for AI agents (Claude, Cursor, VS Code). - Works offline: images never leave the computer. It only asks GitHub for updates. ## Pages (English) - [Apolo · Free image optimizer: compress to WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL](https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/): Free image optimizer for Mac, Windows and Linux: compress and convert to WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, JPEG and PNG without uploading your photos, seeing what you lose before you save. - [Download Apolo for Mac · Free image optimizer](https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/download/mac/): Apolo for macOS 11 or later, on Apple silicon and Intel: optimize images to WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, JPEG and PNG while seeing the result. Open the .dmg and drag Apolo to the Applications folder. 2. The first time, macOS warns you that Apolo isn't signed. Go to System Settings › Privacy & Security and click “Open Anyway”. 3. If it says it's damaged, open Terminal and type this: ```sh xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Apolo.app ``` ### With Homebrew The app, and separately the command line with the server for AI agents: ```sh brew install --cask webcafeina/apolo/apolo ``` ```sh brew install webcafeina/apolo/apolo ``` ### It updates itself When there's a new version, Apolo tells you and installs it with one click. To know, it asks GitHub once a day, and nothing else: you can turn it off in Settings. ### Requirements - macOS 11 Big Sur or later. - A Mac with Apple silicon or Intel: the same .dmg works on both. - With 24-megapixel photos it stays around 2 GB of memory, even in batches of hundreds: it fits an 8 GB Mac. ## Apolo for Windows. https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/download/windows/ For Windows 10 and 11, on x64 and ARM, with the Windows 11 look and Mica. ### Install 1. Open the installer: Apolo installs for your user, without asking for administrator rights. 2. If SmartScreen appears, click “More info” and then “Run anyway”. It warns you because Apolo isn't signed. ### x64 or ARM? If your computer has a Snapdragon or another ARM processor, choose ARM. With Intel or AMD, x64. Edge and Chrome know and choose for you; Firefox doesn't say. ### It updates itself When there's a new version, Apolo tells you and installs it with one click. To know, it asks GitHub once a day, and nothing else: you can turn it off in Settings. ### Requirements - Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. - An x64 (Intel or AMD) or ARM processor. - Nothing else: no Visual C++ or other libraries to install. ## Apolo for Linux. https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/download/linux/ As .deb, .rpm, AppImage and a PKGBUILD for Arch, on x64 and ARM, with the GNOME or KDE look. ### Ubuntu and Debian With Apolo's repository, it updates with the rest of your system: ```sh sudo install -dm755 /etc/apt/keyrings sudo curl -fsSLo /etc/apt/keyrings/apolo.asc https://apolo.webcafeina.com/apolo.asc sudo curl -fsSLo /etc/apt/sources.list.d/apolo.sources https://apolo.webcafeina.com/apt/apolo.sources sudo apt update && sudo apt install apolo ``` ### Fedora and openSUSE Fedora: ```sh sudo curl -fsSLo /etc/yum.repos.d/apolo.repo https://apolo.webcafeina.com/rpm/apolo.repo sudo dnf install apolo ``` openSUSE: ```sh sudo zypper addrepo https://apolo.webcafeina.com/rpm/apolo.repo sudo zypper install apolo ``` ### Arch, Manjaro, EndeavourOS and CachyOS With the PKGBUILD from this site. Coming soon to the AUR, as apolo-bin. ```sh mkdir apolo && cd apolo curl -fsSLO https://apolo.webcafeina.com/aur/PKGBUILD makepkg -si ``` ### Any other The AppImage works on almost all of them: allow it to run and open it. ### Updates - With the repository, along with the rest of your system (apt, dnf or zypper). - With a standalone .deb or .rpm, Apolo tells you about each new version and installs it with one click. - On Arch, by building the PKGBUILD again. ### Requirements - 64-bit Linux, on x64 or ARM. - WebKitGTK 4.1, which the package manager installs for you with the .deb and the .rpm. - It looks like GNOME or KDE, depending on your desktop. ## Apolo in the terminal. https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/cli/ The apolo command line does what the app does, for scripts and servers: the same engines, the same options and the same presets. ### Install On macOS and Linux, with Homebrew, which also brings the server for AI agents. Otherwise, download your system's archive from the downloads, under “Other downloads”. ```sh brew install webcafeina/apolo/apolo ``` ### The usual options Each format takes the options of its official tool, and gives the same file, byte for byte: WebP, like cwebp: ```sh apolo webp -q 80 photo.png -o photo.webp ``` AVIF, like avifenc: ```sh apolo avif -q 60 photo.png photo.avif ``` JPEG XL, like cjxl: ```sh apolo jxl photo.png photo.jxl -d 1 ``` JPEG, like cjpeg (MozJPEG): ```sh apolo jpeg -quality 80 -outfile photo.jpg photo.png ``` PNG, like oxipng: ```sh apolo png -o 4 photo.png ``` ### Whole folders apolo lote converts folders and images in parallel, with their subfolders, and never overwrites: if a file exists, the new one gets a number. WebP and AVIF, at the lowest quality that doesn't show: ```sh apolo lote photos/ --formato webp, avif --objetivo 80 ``` At 1920 px on the longest side, only the lightest format per photo: ```sh apolo lote photos/ --formato webp, avif, jpeg --mas-ligero --lado-mayor 1920 ``` With a preset saved in the app: ```sh apolo lote photos/ --preset "For the web" ``` ### Measure the loss SSIMULACRA 2, PSNR and SSIM of a result against its original. At 90 or more you can't tell them apart; at 70, it's high quality; at 50, it shows. ```sh apolo medir photo.png photo.webp ``` ### In Spanish By default, in your system's language. To change it, --idioma es (or en). ## Apolo, from your AI agent. https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/agents/ Claude, Cursor, VS Code and any agent that speaks MCP optimize your images with Apolo's engines, on your computer. ### What it can do - Analyze an image or a whole folder. - Optimize an image, with the equivalent cwebp, cjpeg, oxipng, avifenc or cjxl command. - Compare formats at the same perceived quality, and measure the loss with SSIMULACRA 2. - Crop, resize and look at images. - Convert whole folders in batches, and save presets. - And it never overwrites or deletes: it always writes new files. ### Claude Desktop In Apolo, the MCP row in the sidebar creates the extension, which you install once. It's also in the downloads, under “Other downloads”. The server lives inside the app and updates with it: after updating Apolo, quit and reopen Claude Desktop. ### Claude Code macOS: ```sh claude mcp add --scope user apolo -- "/Applications/Apolo.app/Contents/MacOS/apolo-mcp" ``` Windows: ```sh claude mcp add --scope user apolo -- "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Apolo\apolo-mcp.exe" ``` Linux (.deb, .rpm, PKGBUILD): ```sh claude mcp add --scope user apolo -- /usr/bin/apolo-mcp ``` ### Cursor, VS Code and the rest In Apolo, the MCP row gives you what to copy into each one. ### Privacy Images are processed on your computer. What the agent asks for (paths, names, thumbnails) goes into its conversation, and the model provider sees it. ## Convert images to WebP. https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/guides/convert-to-webp/ WebP weighs less than JPEG and PNG, opens in every current browser and supports transparency. Here's how to convert, seeing what you lose. ### Why WebP At the same perceived quality, WebP weighs less than JPEG: in our measurements with 24 photos, 6% less when you can't tell it apart side by side, and 23% less when you can't tell it apart even up close. Against the original PNG, it saves 88%. It also keeps transparency (like PNG) and has a lossless mode that works very well for screenshots and logos. Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge open it, and so does almost any current editing app. - **−23%**: vs JPEG, without it showing even up close - **−88%**: vs the original PNG - **All**: current browsers open it ### With the app 1. Open Apolo and drag the image onto the window (JPG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF, GIF, BMP…). 2. Choose WebP in the format panel. 3. Move the quality, or ask for a score with “Quality by score” and Apolo finds the lowest quality that reaches it. 4. Look at the result with the slider or side by side, with each side's size and SSIMULACRA 2 score. 5. Press Export: the original is left untouched. ### Many at once In Batches, choose a folder, WebP and the preset: Apolo converts them all in parallel, repeats the subfolders and leaves the result next to it, without overwriting anything. ### From the terminal The apolo command line takes cwebp's options and gives the same file, byte for byte: One photo, at quality 80: ```sh apolo webp -q 80 photo.png -o photo.webp ``` A folder, at the lowest quality that doesn't show: ```sh apolo lote photos/ --formato webp --objetivo 80 ``` A screenshot or a logo, lossless: ```sh apolo webp -lossless -z 9 screenshot.png -o screenshot.webp ``` ### Screenshots and logos: lossless In images with text, flat colors or transparency, lossless WebP keeps exactly the same pixels and weighs much less: in our test screenshots and logos, 62% less than the original PNG, against the 33% you get optimizing the PNG with OxiPNG. - Original PNG: 408 KB - OxiPNG: 275 KB · −33 % - Lossless WebP: 155 KB · −62 % Three screenshots and three logos with transparency, the same pixels in all three cases. ## AVIF, WebP or JPEG XL. https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/guides/avif-webp-or-jpeg-xl/ All three weigh less than JPEG, but not by the same amount, nor everywhere. We measured them at the same perceived quality. ### How we measured Comparing formats “at quality 80” is meaningless: AVIF's 80 isn't JPEG's 80. The fair way is to match what you see. For that we use SSIMULACRA 2, a perceived-quality metric: at 80 you can't tell the image apart from the original side by side, and at 90 not even up close. For each photo and each format, Apolo finds the lowest quality that reaches that score, and we compare the sizes. ### If you can't tell side by side (score 80) - AVIF: 62 KB · −25 % vs JPEG - JPEG XL: 66 KB · −20 % vs JPEG - WebP: 78 KB · −6 % vs JPEG - JPEG: 83 KB The 24 photos of the Kodak Lossless True Color Image Suite (768×512, PNG of 626 KB on average), each at the lowest quality that reaches a SSIMULACRA 2 score of 80. Measured with apolo 0.18.3, on October 27, 2026. ### If you can't tell even up close (score 90) At high quality, JPEG XL pulls ahead (41% less than JPEG) with AVIF close behind (36%). At tighter quality, AVIF is the lightest (25%). WebP sits in between, and its advantage grows with quality. - JPEG XL: 134 KB · −41 % vs JPEG - AVIF: 146 KB · −36 % vs JPEG - WebP: 174 KB · −23 % vs JPEG - JPEG: 226 KB The 24 photos of the Kodak Lossless True Color Image Suite (768×512, PNG of 626 KB on average), each at the lowest quality that reaches a SSIMULACRA 2 score of 90. Measured with apolo 0.18.3, on October 27, 2026. ### Where each one opens **WebP** - In every current browser and almost any app. The safest. **AVIF** - In current browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari for years now) and in more and more apps. **JPEG XL** - Safari opens it; other browsers are getting there. Before serving it alone, check caniuse.com. **JPEG** - Everywhere, including email, printers and old software. ### Which to choose **For a website** - AVIF, with WebP or JPEG as a fallback in a for whatever can't open it. **To share without thinking** - WebP, or JPEG if it goes somewhere old. **To archive at high quality** - JPEG XL. It also recompresses the JPEGs you already have without losing anything. **Screenshots, logos and graphics** - Lossless WebP or optimized PNG. ### Try it with your photos The same, with your images: Apolo converts to all four formats and keeps the lightest for each photo. ```sh apolo lote photos/ --formato avif, jxl, webp, jpeg --objetivo 80 --mas-ligero ``` ## Compress without losing quality. https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/guides/compress-images-without-losing-quality/ There are two ways: without losing a single pixel, or losing what the eye can't see. The second saves far more, and it can be measured. ### Lossless: the same pixels The resulting image is identical, pixel for pixel. It's what you want for screenshots, logos and graphics. In our tests with that kind of image, optimizing the PNG with OxiPNG saves 33%, and turning it into lossless WebP, 62%. With photos, lossless savings are small. The exception: a JPEG you already have can be turned into JPEG XL without losing anything, and it weighs quite a bit less. - Original PNG: 408 KB - OxiPNG: 275 KB · −33 % - Lossless WebP: 155 KB · −62 % Three screenshots and three logos with transparency, the same pixels in all three cases. Optimized PNG, like oxipng: ```sh apolo png -o 4 screenshot.png ``` Lossless WebP: ```sh apolo webp -lossless -z 9 screenshot.png -o screenshot.webp ``` ### With a loss you can't see Photos compress much further if you accept losing detail the eye doesn't notice. At a SSIMULACRA 2 score of 90, which you can't tell apart even up close, our 24 photos weigh 79% less in JPEG XL and 77% less in AVIF than the original PNG. ### How to know it doesn't show Apolo measures each result with SSIMULACRA 2, the perceived-quality metric from the JPEG XL project: at 90 or more you can't tell them apart; at 70, it's high quality; at 50, it shows. And it shows the original and the result with a slider, side by side or with a difference map. Instead of trying qualities blindly, you can ask for the score: “Quality by score” finds, photo by photo, the lowest quality that reaches it. A folder, without it showing even up close: ```sh apolo lote photos/ --formato avif --objetivo 90 ``` Measure a result against its original: ```sh apolo medir photo.png photo.avif ``` ### And the size What usually weighs most in a photo is that it's bigger than it will be seen. A 4000-pixel phone photo shown at 1200 carries eleven times more pixels than needed. Apolo shrinks it to the longest side you ask for before compressing. ```sh apolo lote photos/ --formato avif --objetivo 90 --lado-mayor 2400 ``` ## Optimize images for the web. https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/guides/optimize-images-for-the-web/ A website loads fast if its images weigh just what they need. It comes down to four decisions: size, format, quality and how they're served. ### 1. Size Each image at the size it's shown, times two for high-density screens. A photo that takes 800 pixels of width needs 1600, not the camera's 4000. Apolo shrinks to the longest side you ask for, and never enlarges. ```sh apolo lote photos/ --formato avif, webp --objetivo 80 --lado-mayor 1600 ``` ### 2. Format AVIF is today the lightest format every current browser opens: in our measurements, 25% less than JPEG at the same perceived quality. WebP as a fallback, and PNG or lossless WebP for logos and screenshots. - **−25%**: AVIF vs JPEG, at the same perceived quality - **−62%**: lossless WebP vs PNG, for screenshots and logos ### 3. Quality For website photos, a SSIMULACRA 2 score of 80 (you can't tell it apart from the original side by side) is a good starting point; 90 if the photo is the product. With “Quality by score”, Apolo finds the quality that reaches that score for each photo, instead of using the same number for all of them. ### 4. How they're served With , the browser takes the first format it can open. Dimensions (width and height) stop the page from jumping while it loads, and loading="lazy" defers whatever is off screen (but never the main image at the top). ```html What the photo shows ``` ### This website, for example Every image on this website was optimized by Apolo: screenshots in AVIF with a WebP fallback, at a score of 90 because they contain text. At Webcafeína we build websites like this, that load fast. ## Optimize images with an AI agent. https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/guides/optimize-images-with-an-ai-agent/ With Apolo's MCP server, your agent converts, compares and measures images on your computer. You just ask in plain words. ### What it is MCP is how AI agents use tools on your computer. Apolo ships an MCP server with eleven tools: analyze, optimize, compare formats, measure quality, look at an image, convert folders in batches and save presets. Images are processed on your computer with the same engines as the app. ### Connect it **Claude Desktop** - In Apolo, the MCP row in the sidebar creates the extension, which you install once and updates with the app. **Claude Code** - One command, your system's, on the agents page. **Cursor, VS Code and the rest** - Apolo's MCP row gives you what to copy. ### What to ask - “Convert the photos in ~/Desktop/trip to AVIF at 1920 pixels and tell me how much I saved.” - “Compare WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL for this photo at the same quality and keep the lightest.” - “Measure how much was lost between photo.png and photo.webp.” - “Keep the left half of this screenshot and make it a lossless WebP.” - “Save a preset for blog photos: AVIF, score 80, 1600 pixels.” ### What it doesn't do It never overwrites or deletes: it always writes new files alongside. And it doesn't see images you attach to the conversation: you tell it where the file is on your computer. Your photos never leave your computer. What the agent asks for (paths, names, thumbnails) does go into its conversation, and the model provider sees it. ## Convert HEIC to JPG. https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/guides/heic-to-jpg/ The iPhone saves photos as HEIC, which is light but doesn't open everywhere. Apolo opens them and turns them into JPG, WebP or AVIF. ### Why HEIC is hard to open HEIC has been the iPhone's format for years: it's light, but many websites, apps and Windows or Linux computers can't open it without adding something. Turning it into JPG fixes that; into WebP or AVIF, it also weighs less. ### With the app 1. Drag the HEIC onto Apolo, on Mac, Windows or Linux: it opens without installing anything else. 2. Choose JPEG so it opens everywhere, or WebP or AVIF if it's going to a website. 3. Export. For a whole folder of phone photos, use Batches. ### How much each option weighs With libheif's sample photo (701 KB as HEIC), at a score of 80 you can't tell apart side by side: as JPEG, 350 KB (50% less); as WebP, 289 KB (59% less), and as AVIF, 252 KB (64% less). The score is measured against the opened HEIC, which is already a compressed photo. - HEIC: 701 KB - JPEG: 350 KB · −50 % - WebP: 289 KB · −59 % - AVIF: 252 KB · −64 % libheif's sample photo, at a SSIMULACRA 2 score of 80 against the opened HEIC. ### From the terminal A folder of iPhone photos to JPG, without it showing: ```sh apolo lote iphone-photos/ --formato jpeg --objetivo 90 ``` To WebP, for a website: ```sh apolo lote iphone-photos/ --formato webp --objetivo 80 --lado-mayor 2048 ``` ### Or stop the iPhone saving HEIC On the iPhone, Settings › Camera › Formats › “Most Compatible” saves new photos as JPG. They weigh more, and the ones you already have stay HEIC. ## Apolo vs Squoosh. https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/compare/apolo-vs-squoosh/ Both compress with the same engines and show the before and after. The difference is in everything else. ### In short Squoosh is Google Chrome Labs' image compression web app: it runs in the browser, uploads nothing, and shows the original and the result with a slider. It's excellent for a single image. Apolo does the same in a native app, and adds what Squoosh doesn't have: whole folders, a quality score you can ask for, a command line and a server for AI agents. ### Side by side | What | Apolo | Squoosh | | --- | --- | --- | | Price | Free | Free | | License | GPL-3.0 (open source) | Apache-2.0 (open source) | | Where it runs | macOS, Windows and Linux, on x64 and ARM | In the browser, nothing to install | | Your images | Never leave your computer | Never leave your computer: the browser processes them | | Formats it writes | WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, JPEG (MozJPEG), PNG (OxiPNG) and QOI | WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, MozJPEG, OxiPNG, QOI and others | | Whole folders | Yes, in parallel and with subfolders | No: one image at a time | | Command line | Yes, with the options of cwebp, cjpeg, oxipng, avifenc and cjxl | No | | AI agents (MCP) | Yes, eleven tools | No | | Measures the loss | Yes: SSIMULACRA 2, PSNR and SSIM, and quality by score | No: you compare by eye | Squoosh's details checked on its website and repository on October 27, 2026. If something has changed, let us know. ### What each one does better **What Squoosh does better** - Nothing to install: it opens in any browser, even on a computer that isn't yours. - It has an extra experimental codec or two, like WebP 2. **What Apolo does better** - Whole folders, in parallel and with subfolders, without overwriting anything. - It measures the loss with SSIMULACRA 2 and finds the lowest quality that reaches the score you ask for. - It gives the same file, byte for byte, as cwebp, cjpeg, oxipng, avifenc and cjxl, with the equivalent command to copy. - It opens iPhone HEIC, ships a command line and an MCP server, and updates itself. Squoosh's code hasn't changed since August 2024. ### Which to choose **Squoosh** - An image now and then, on any computer. **Apolo** - Many images, folders, a workflow or an AI agent. ## Apolo vs TinyPNG. https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/compare/apolo-vs-tinypng/ TinyPNG is the best-known compression website. Apolo does the work on your computer, with no limits and nothing uploaded. ### In short TinyPNG (by Tinify) compresses and converts images on its website: you upload them, it processes them on its servers and deletes them after 48 hours. Free for up to 20 images of 5 MB at a time, and format conversion for a few; beyond that, paid plans. Apolo does the work on your computer: nothing uploaded, no limit on images or size, and seeing what you lose in each one. ### Side by side | What | Apolo | TinyPNG | | --- | --- | --- | | Price | Free | Free with limits; Web Pro and Web Ultra are paid | | License | GPL-3.0 (open source) | Proprietary | | Where it runs | macOS, Windows and Linux, on x64 and ARM | In the browser, with an API, a CDN and a WordPress plugin | | Your images | Never leave your computer | Uploaded to their servers, which delete them after 48 hours | | Formats it writes | WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, JPEG (MozJPEG), PNG (OxiPNG) and QOI | AVIF, WebP, PNG and JPEG | | Whole folders | Yes, in parallel and with subfolders | Free, up to 20 images of 5 MB at a time | | Command line | Yes, with the options of cwebp, cjpeg, oxipng, avifenc and cjxl | No; a paid API, with 500 free compressions a month | | AI agents (MCP) | Yes, eleven tools | No | | Measures the loss | Yes: SSIMULACRA 2, PSNR and SSIM, and quality by score | No | TinyPNG's details checked on its website and repository on October 27, 2026. If something has changed, let us know. ### What each one does better **What TinyPNG does better** - Nothing to install, and it works from a phone. - It has a WordPress plugin, an image CDN and integrations with Figma, Make and Zapier. **What Apolo does better** - Your images never leave your computer: it matters with client photos, documents or anything private. - Free with no limits, including whole folders. - It writes JPEG XL and QOI, and opens HEIC. - It shows the result against the original and measures the loss with SSIMULACRA 2. ### Which to choose **TinyPNG** - A few images from any device, or compressing inside WordPress. **Apolo** - Private images, lots of them, or without paying by volume. ## Apolo vs ImageOptim. https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/compare/apolo-vs-imageoptim/ ImageOptim is a Mac classic for making images lighter without changing them. Apolo also converts them to the new formats. ### In short ImageOptim is a free, open-source Mac app: you drag images onto it and it makes them lighter without changing their format, lossless by default. It also handles animated GIFs and SVG. Apolo, besides optimizing JPEG and PNG, converts to WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL, which weigh considerably less, and also runs on Windows and Linux. ### Side by side | What | Apolo | ImageOptim | | --- | --- | --- | | Price | Free | Free | | License | GPL-3.0 (open source) | GPL-2.0 or later (open source) | | Where it runs | macOS, Windows and Linux, on x64 and ARM | macOS only (11 or later) | | Your images | Never leave your computer | Never leave your computer | | Formats it writes | WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, JPEG (MozJPEG), PNG (OxiPNG) and QOI | Optimizes JPEG, PNG, GIF and SVG without changing format; doesn't write WebP or AVIF | | Whole folders | Yes, in parallel and with subfolders | Yes, by dragging several | | Command line | Yes, with the options of cwebp, cjpeg, oxipng, avifenc and cjxl | Yes | | AI agents (MCP) | Yes, eleven tools | No | | Measures the loss | Yes: SSIMULACRA 2, PSNR and SSIM, and quality by score | No; lossless by default | ImageOptim's details checked on its website and repository on October 27, 2026. If something has changed, let us know. ### What each one does better **What ImageOptim does better** - It optimizes SVG and animated GIFs, which Apolo doesn't write. - It plugs into the Finder: drag and done, nothing to decide. **What Apolo does better** - It converts to WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL: at the same perceived quality, much lighter than an optimized JPEG or PNG. - It shows the result and measures the loss with SSIMULACRA 2, with quality by score. - It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, and ships a server for AI agents. ### Which to choose **ImageOptim** - Making JPEG, PNG, GIF or SVG lighter without changing anything, on a Mac. **Apolo** - Moving to modern formats, on any system, or seeing and measuring the loss. ## Apolo vs Caesium. https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/compare/apolo-vs-caesium/ Both are free, open source and work on your computer. What changes is the formats, the systems and how the result is measured. ### In short Caesium Image Compressor is a free, open-source app for Windows and Mac (on Linux you build it yourself) that compresses JPG, PNG, WebP and TIFF in batches, with a preview. Its latest release, 2.8.5, is from May 2025, and version 3 is in the works. Apolo also does batches on the desktop, and adds AVIF and JPEG XL, the SSIMULACRA 2 quality score, ready-to-install ARM and Linux builds, and a server for AI agents. ### Side by side | What | Apolo | Caesium | | --- | --- | --- | | Price | Free | Free | | License | GPL-3.0 (open source) | GPL-3.0 (open source) | | Where it runs | macOS, Windows and Linux, on x64 and ARM | Windows 10 and macOS 12 or later; on Linux, building it yourself | | Your images | Never leave your computer | Never leave your computer (it also has a web version) | | Formats it writes | WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, JPEG (MozJPEG), PNG (OxiPNG) and QOI | JPG, PNG, WebP and TIFF | | Whole folders | Yes, in parallel and with subfolders | Yes, several at once | | Command line | Yes, with the options of cwebp, cjpeg, oxipng, avifenc and cjxl | Yes, separately (CaesiumCLT) | | AI agents (MCP) | Yes, eleven tools | No | | Measures the loss | Yes: SSIMULACRA 2, PSNR and SSIM, and quality by score | No; a preview of the result | Caesium's details checked on its website and repository on October 27, 2026. If something has changed, let us know. ### What each one does better **What Caesium does better** - It handles TIFF, which Apolo reads but doesn't write. - It has a web version to compress a few images without installing anything. **What Apolo does better** - It writes AVIF and JPEG XL, which weigh considerably less than JPG and WebP at the same perceived quality. - It measures the loss with SSIMULACRA 2 and finds the lowest quality that reaches a score. - Packages for Linux (.deb, .rpm, AppImage and repositories), and for Windows and Linux on ARM. - It opens iPhone HEIC and ships an MCP server for AI agents. ### Which to choose **Caesium** - JPG, PNG or TIFF with a simple tool, on Windows or Mac. **Apolo** - Modern formats, Linux or ARM, or measuring the loss. ## Frequently asked questions. https://apolo.webcafeina.com/en/faq/ ### Is Apolo free? Yes. It's free software under the GPLv3: you can use, copy and change it, at work too. The code is on GitHub. ### Does it upload my images anywhere? No. Everything happens on your computer: your images never leave it. The only thing Apolo does outside is ask GitHub, once a day, which version is the latest. It doesn't send your images, who you are, or how often you use it. You can turn it off in Settings. ### Why does my system warn me the first time I open it? Because Apolo isn't signed with an Apple or Microsoft certificate. On macOS, go to System Settings › Privacy & Security and click “Open Anyway”. On Windows, in SmartScreen, click “More info” and “Run anyway”. ### Which formats does it read and write? It writes WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, JPEG (with MozJPEG), PNG (with OxiPNG) and QOI. It reads those, plus HEIC (iPhone photos), TIFF, GIF, BMP and PNM. ### Does it give the same result as the official tools? Yes, byte for byte: cwebp, cjpeg (MozJPEG), oxipng, avifenc and cjxl are inside Apolo, with all their options. Apolo shows you the equivalent command so you can run it anywhere, and it's checked in every version. ### What is the SSIMULACRA 2 score? A measure of how visible the loss is, designed to match what a person sees. At 90 you can't tell them apart even flipping between both images; at 80, you can't tell them apart side by side; below 50, it shows. With “Quality by score”, Apolo finds the lowest quality that reaches the score you ask for, photo by photo. ### Does it work on an Intel Mac, Windows on ARM or Linux on ARM? Yes. The macOS .dmg works on Apple silicon and Intel, and Windows and Linux have their own versions for x64 and ARM. ### How much memory does it need? With 24-megapixel photos it stays around 2 GB, even in batches of hundreds of photos: it fits a computer with 8 GB. ### How does it update? By itself: when there's a new version, Apolo tells you and installs it with one click. On Linux, with the repository, it updates with the rest of your system. ### Can I use it from the terminal? Yes, with the apolo command line, which takes the options of cwebp, cjpeg, oxipng, avifenc and cjxl, and converts whole folders with apolo lote. ### Does it work with AI agents? Yes. Apolo includes an MCP server for Claude, Cursor, VS Code and any agent that speaks it: it analyzes, optimizes, compares formats and converts folders on your computer, and it never overwrites or deletes anything. ### Who makes Apolo? Webcafeína, a web design and development studio. ### ¿Sube mis imágenes a algún sitio?
